Hard plastic or Steel body
The pop-up sprinkler body is hard plastic or steel with two layers; an internal and external. Plastic pop-up
sprinklers are the most common ones.
Pop-up and retraction mechanism
Pop-up sprinklers are built with a pop-up and retraction mechanism. The inner plastic body pops out to release water and an external one that remains on the ground during irrigation.
Inbuilt filter
Inside the pop-up sprinkler is an inbuilt filter that removes soil and debris from water. Removing debris prevents possible clogging of the sprinkler nozzle.
Spring
The pop-up sprinkler has a strong non-corrosive metal spring inside. The spring enhances the pop-up and retraction mechanism.
Nozzles

Pop-up Sprinkler Setup and Connection
The setup and connection of pop-up sprinklers depends on the topography, water source and size of lawn. If the lawn field is large, we often divide it into zones or sections to make irrigation easier and efficient.Water flow to the sprinkler is by pipe connection and in trenches to prevent damage and interference. HDPE pipes are used for mainline and sub-mainline connection.A booster
pump is placed at the mainline pipe connection to boost pressure of water.Solenoid valves control the irrigation zones. These valves are placed in a nearby manhole and connect to mainline pipe connection.Pop-up sprinklers connects to the sub-mainline pipes underground. The sprinkler body is buried except the part with nozzle which pops out when irrigating. When connecting pop-up sprinklers equal pipes and tee fitting is used to prevent pressure drops.The controller is mounted and connected to the power source, sensors and solenoid valves.
Requirements for Pop-up Sprinkler System Installation
- Pop-up Sprinklers – to deliver uniform water sprays.
- Pipe connection – HDPE pipes are common for mainline and sub-mainline connection in pop-up sprinkler system.
- Solenoid Valves – used to control water flow. Starts or stops irrigation.
- Smart Controllers or timers – automates irrigation by turning solenoid valves on or off to start or stop water flow.
- Booster Pump – to increase the pressure of water for uniform and efficient distribution by pop-up sprinklers.
- Pump controller – automates the pump by turning it when irrigation starts and off when irrigation stops.
- Pressure tank – to prevent pressure surge and pump cycling by providing water supply when flow in the system is insufficient.
How Pop-up Sprinklers Operate
When the solenoid valves opens, the water flows causes the booster pump to start and water flows at high pressure. High pressure water flow causes the sprinkler head to pop out and release water at high pressure in slow circular motion. Once the set irrigation duration ends, the timer stops the power flow causing solenoid valves to close. The pop-up sprinkler retracts back to position and the booster pump shuts down.
